Having been involved with the work that Barry Mulford has carried out in relation to a replacement roof at Oak Cottage, Leigh Street, Leigh Upon Mendip, Somerset BA3 5QP; where the existing roof to the rear barn was stripped and completely replaced with a new oak roof, consisting of new trusses, purlins and exposed rafters: I can confirm in my professional capacity as a Building Surveyor that Barry Mulford is knowledgeable, concientious, and skilled in his work. I would be pleased to discuss the same with any potential customer who wishes to contact me directly.

Barry has been involved with the majority of the carpentry project on our grade 2* Merchants House in the market square at Shepton Mallet. This work has included a considerable amount of repair to the existing fabric requiring a huge range of spliced joints. The quality of his workmanship was highly praised by the experts from the BBC program Restored to Glory when they featured the building in their educational program at the end of the first series. He has repaired the existing roof structure saving more than 80% of the original fabric when we first thought 50% was realistic. The same exercise was undertaken with the floor structures with similar results. New clench nailed cross planked external doors were constructed by Barry along with 3 replacement spiral staircases. The list goes on, for more detail and information on what Barry has done check my website www.merchants-house.co.uk . Barry is a conscientious workman who does not rush a job but takes his time to get things right. Conservation work is a speciality of Barry’s however he is just as versatile constructing new work. One of the Jobs where I first met him was at the 14th century Pilton tithe barn where he formed part of a team which assisted Peter McCurdy, one of the worlds leading experts in timber framing to re-instate a roof which was destroyed by fire in the 1960’s. See Peter McCurdy’s website page for the barn http://www.mccurdyco.com/pilton.html All in all Barry has been employed by us for the last 2 years and I would have no qualms about recommending him.
